The Canadian Skin Cancer Foundation was registered as an association in September 2002 and incorporated under the Societies Act on October 2003. Its nine member board of directors represents the medical, professional and business communities. Approval by Canada Customs and Revenue Agency as a registered charity was received on December 10, 2004.

Recent medical studies from the Canadian Dermatology Association and the Canadian Cancer Society have shown that ever increasing numbers of Canadians are being diagnosed with skin cancers. Current Canadian statistics indicate skin cancer diagnosis now exceed the combined total for lung, breast and prostate cancers. The fortunate part of this news is that unlike many types of cancer, almost all skin cancers are preventable. Prevention of these diseases and mitigation of their disastrous effects can be achieved through education for awareness, prevention strategies and early detection.

The Canadian Skin Cancer Foundation started in 2000 with a fundraiser to raise funds for skin cancer research and treatment. A charity golf tournament was organized in 2000 and expanded in 2001. Its success and community support has seen it evolve into an annual event.

The recipient of these donations was the Cross Cancer Institute in Edmonton, which provides research, education and treatment of all cancers. However, the institute could not provide assurance that funding would be channeled to specific cancer programs. No National or Provincial organizations could not be found that would target skin cancer and this led to Dr. Lycka's decision to start an organization that could provide a focus specific to skin cancers.

To date the Society has not paid any director fees or honorariums is being managed on a volunteer basis.
